IF:Chicken eggs

What came first the chicken or the egg? Well science has finally come up with the answer and it is the chicken...but you know those chickens have to come from somewhere.

I posted this picture last night and thought it was "blah". It was a bit of struggle painting. The darks and lights of the the linen were  elusive.  I am really glad that I posted it though. It does help to look at it with fresh eyes the day after and I really appreciate the nice comments!

  1. I think you are WAY to close to it 'cause I think it is very nice. It is playful, there is still spontaneity while remaining true and solid. I think it is beautiful work, Alice. Great composition- great palette- my fav so far!

  2. Well, since there's no before image, then there's nothing to indicate that this one is "blah"...
In fact I like the eggs just fine...or should I say over~easy? Your choice of brushstroke direction on the eggs works well without being obtrusive or destroying the form. I also like the minimal color shifts.

  3. I don't think it looks 'blah' at all! You have a nice style, and I love all the unexpected colors to be found in this. You probably have been looking at it too long, and if you see it with fresh eyes, you will appreciate it more.

  4. not blah, it's grande, I like this best of all - better than the chess pieces. Lots of vigour and texture, and a wonderful dynamic is happening. I think you approach using complementary pairs closer in this work - and that adds more unity

  5. Thank you for your nice comment on my blog. I just love your egg painting. I love still life paintings and drawings, especially when they're rather impressionistic... Realistic, but full of wonderful brushstrokes and mixes of colors. Lovely. (Interestingly, I also felt mine was blah until I looked at it later. There's a lot to be said for stepping away, isn't there?)

  6. The linen looks good. Fabric is always a struggle. Form without defined structure. Like quicksand, struggle just gets you deeper into a mess.
